My Grandmother, Myself

I remember Grandmama. You had these beautiful Hydrangeas on your Northern facing front porch. Your house was white with green shutters and I thought the beautiful blue bee-attracting flowers were so Grandmotherly at the time. Little did I know then, that Hydrangeas would become one of my delights too. Thank you for having those flowers there. I wonder who passed them to you and who planted them by the end of your porch?
These are mine now. They are just as blue as yours were then. And I do love them.

What's in grandmama's fridge? 1972
I remember this fridge. Boy it was outdated compared to the one in our own kitchen. This one was neat because of that handle on the door and the simple fact that this one would kill a kid if the kid got locked inside. Now picture this, govt cheese, potato salad, milk in a glass jar, misc pkgs of wax-paper-wrapped stuff, Pepsi, Blue Bonnet margarine, bottles of medicine in the door, celery in a jar of water, white paper wrapped bologna, and pyrex bowls of whatever she had made because the grandkids were coming to visit. But still with all that stuff inside, the first warning was..."stay away from that fridge, you will suffocate if you get locked in it". How would one have fit inside it is still a mystery to me. I hear you though grandmama. And to this day if we have to put a fridge to the curb for pickup, we take the door off. Don't think any modern fridges will lock a kid in, but hey....better safe than sorry.
yummy grandmama's fridge was kid heaven:)

As I begin this journey, I have to say Gertilu inspires me still. Not daily, but the love she showed me as a little girl finds its way into much of who I am now. I find myself naturally gravitating to the comforting seeds she planted in my spirit when I was 6 thru 11 years old. I learned what comfort felt like, she used to let me sleep in her half bed when our family visited during summers and holidays. Her bed was little and she was little but round and fluffy and the best place in the world was lying close to my grandmother in the summer evening listening to her and my mama chat until I fell asleep. I remember the sounds of the highway and the streaking headlight shadows on the primary green walls of my grandmama's bedroom. I remember. That is why I write. Thank you Grandmama Gertie Lu Otis Eaves. Born 1919, resident of Trenton Tennessee most of her life. Raised 3 kids, buried one. Route 4 Trenton TN phone number 855-1868....I love you. I remember when you were in your 50's as I am nearing mine. I thought you were so old...sorry....I know now that you weren't that old then. That is unless I am now becoming old too. I didn't think old would feel this good.
